Non-human Activity Soundscape

Interactive sound with moving images

I stayed on Hiiumaa island for two weeks in July 2025 to participate in the artist-in-residence program at Kordon residency. During the residency, I experienced being fully surrounded by the rich natural environment of the area. I felt that humans are also part of the ecosystem, without any hierarchy between humans and non-humans. The residency house was located by the sea, and I often heard the sound of children playing, carried by the wind. I decided to incorporate the human voice alongside natural elements in my sound art project.

I used MAX 8 to program the sound pieces. To trigger the sounds, I filmed movements in nature, such as grass blown by the wind, sea waves, bees gathering at beehives, and flowing streams. These movements were transformed into black-and-white blob objects in MAX 8, and their values determined the sound output: the recorded voice of a singer from Hiiumaa.
